The Experimentation Center of the Teatro Colón presents starting this Thursday, April 9 at 8:30 p.m. My overwhelming situationthe choreographer’s new work Diana Szeinblum. The functions extend until the 18th of this month.
My overwhelming situation He had performed six shows in the Cazadores Foundation space in 2025 and on this return he expanded his search in relation to “physical memory, affective genealogies and the ways in which primary links are inscribed in the body.”
The piece is basically built on the fact of have immediate family members dance together: a father and his daughter, a mother and her son, a woman with her children, a dancer with his mother. Diana Szeinblum says that the work “tries to bring bodies together and not relationships.”
Szeinblum’s training includes his studies at the San Martín Theater Dance Workshop; Then, for a short period, he joined the San Martín Contemporary Ballet during the direction of Oscar Araiz. In 2003 he created his interesting work for this same company At the time of gold. Previously, in 1990, he had entered the Folkwang Tanz Schule (the famous German school created by Kurt Jooss) and some time later he joined the student group of this school, artistically supervised by Pina Bausch.
Many years before, Pina herself had studied at the Folkwang Tanz Schule – the fundamental center of modern dance and German dance-theater – and her teacher had been Kurt Jooss.
In different interviews, Szeinblum spoke of his interest in working with what persists in bodies beyond family narratives, “those traces that remain even when words are no longer enough.”
In My overwhelming situationeach duo embodies what she calls “a small domestic utopia, the possibility of restoring an original contact, of recovering the inseparable that time made fragile, or distant.”
The cast brings together duos made up of different family ties: Rodolfo Opazo with Quío Garat Opazo and Vera Garat; Rafael and Lorenzo Nir with Szeinblum herself; Hernán Franco with Roxana; Natalia and Luis Tencer.
The live music is by Macarena Aguilar Tau (MAQ) and its sound design “dialogues in real time with the bodies.” This surely means that the accompanying sound is improvised according to what is happening in the scene.
In an interview published in the magazine Classical Music BASzeinblum spoke of the relationship between the fictional and autobiographical aspects of the piece: “The work takes place in a constant tension between what we know and what we can only imagine through movement. The autobiographical appears from the outset, each duo introduces itself announcing its kinship: My mom and I, My dad and I. It is the factual data, the information that we all share.”
My compelling situation could be inscribed in the so-called conceptual current of 20th century dance, which already has several decades of history and is the heir of the New York “post modern dance” of the 1960s. Among other aspects, the choice as performers of people without dance training and also the idea that what happens on stage must or can be supported by philosophical, sociological or psychoanalytic concepts.
Szeinblum prefers to call “a poetic utopia” that dialogue with the fictional and that arises when the bodies of the performers They try to recover a lost contact. He adds: “we seek to force the sensation of that which no longer exists as a conscious memory, that forceful and structural physical contact of the first years of life. The fictional, dance and choreographic are here tools for the body to reveal what has no words but which constitutes our structural and existential basis.”
Physical contact occupies an important place in the work. Says Szeinblum: “Allowing bodies to touch from the notion of conception reconstructs ideas learned from the primary encounter and care. No person in this world would have life without that care first. If we can reinvent our past through contact, then we can relearn ways to imagine the future.”
The functions of My overwhelming situation They will be held on April 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17 and 18, with tickets available online and in person, and with special discounts for retirees.
