Roblox changes to better manage games for children under 9 and 15 years old

After implementing a new identity verification system with AI, Roblox announced the arrival of a special version for children and teenagers within the platform. The California company founded in 2004 by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel presented Roblox Kids, an experience with content for children under 9 years old (no chat access and more parental controls) and Roblox Select, for users between 9 and 15 years old. Its global deployment is scheduled for early June of this year.

To distinguish the experiences, Roblox Kids will have a blue interface and the Select version will have a black interface. They will use the same age verification technology that Roblox implemented earlier this year for chatwhere the system scans each person’s face to estimate how old they are. From now on, it will offer users under 16 years of age content and communication “appropriate for their age,” the company says.

Kids and Select accounts They will only have access to games that have passed a thorough review process and that includes content review, developer verification, and analysis of platform usage patterns. The catalogs of these new versions will include most of the games that users in these age groups already play.

Kids and Select, the new account types for Roblox, with more or fewer options depending on age

These announcements were presented in an exclusive Roblox virtual meeting where Matt Kaufman, Director of Security, and Eliza Jacobs, Vice President of Product Policy, participated. It arrives at a time of transformation, in the midst of the boom in agentic AI and also in times where this platform has lost a lot of reputation among adults who decide to prohibit its use.

But Roblox is a giant, a platform available as an app on iOS and Android, on consoles, computers and VR devices. According to official data, It has 144 million active users per day globally and more than 2 million creators. That is its great differential: it enables user-generated content, which allows it to offer millions of games through a game development tool called Roblox Studio.

By early 2026, half of daily active users had already completed facial age verification. After this implementation as a requirement to access the chat, now They plan to extend these age verifications to games. According to a report intended for investors, Roblox has a younger user base than self-reported data. Children under 13 years old represent 35% of users of the platform; users between 13 and 17, 38%; and those over 18: 27%.

As Kaufman noted during the presentation: “Access to content is limited until users complete the age verification process. The accuracy of the age verification system is constantly evaluated, these verifications are not a one-time process; we may ask users to verify themselves again in the future.”

Based on the user’s verified age or that established by a linked and verified parent or guardian, Roblox will automatically assign users a Kids or Select account. In the first case, it will be intended for boys and girls between 5 and 8 years old. These accounts include games classified for children under 9 years (with two classifications: “minimal” or “mild”).

Roblox will organize content according to age: Kids (under 9 years old); Select (from 9 to 15 years old) or from 16 years old

Roblox Kids only has games that pass its selection criteria, and in this case, chat remains disabled by default.

Roblox Select is for kids ages 9 to 15 and the company points out that in this case, children of this age (although what happens at each age varies greatly) are prepared for a greater variety of games. In this type of accounts they will have access to games rated up to what they call “moderate” and, like Roblox Kids, they will only include games that have passed their selection criteria.

In most regions, the chat will be activated. From Roblox they say that this will allow users to chat with their trusted friends and users of a similar age group.

TO From the age of 16, users will have a standard Roblox accountwith access to all features and the game catalog, except restricted content, designed for users over 18 years of age.

These announcements come with an extension of parental controls that will allow mothers and fathers to block specific games and manage direct chat in experiences until your children turn 16. In addition, they will add a new way to approve specific games for children under 16 years of age. For example, if a younger sibling wants to play a game that is not available on their Roblox Kids account with their older brother or sister, a parent could give them permission to access as an exception.

According to the company, all games will go through a three-stage review process before children or younger teenagers see them.

In principle, they will carry out developer verification. Before a creator’s games can be considered for Roblox Kids or Roblox Select accounts, they must meet basic eligibility requirements that prove they are in good standing and their presence on the platform is safe. For this, developers must complete identity verification or (if you are under 16) connect your account to an account of a linked parent or guardian. Additionally, they must have two-step verification activated and have an active Roblox Plus subscription.

In second place, developers are evaluated in real time. Users aged 16 and over, who now represent a relevant part of the community, are the first to try new games. Roblox says that understanding how they play in real-world conditions and what kind of user reports they submit helps them evaluate games before younger users see them.

In this sense, the platform uses automated signals from the multimodal moderation system in real time. It means that, for example, evaluates an entire scene in a game to determine if it violates its rules.

Finally, games must meet specific gameplay criteria to be accessible to younger users, including account-appropriate content ratings. Some experiences, such as those that present “sensitive topics”social gatherings or free drawing, will be excluded from Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts by default.
