Nine Mexican entities face rainfall of up to 50 mm, electrical shocks and hail due to low pressure channels and the proximity of cold front 46. The National Meteorological Service warns of severe conditions that mainly affect the center, west and southeast of the national territory this April 21.

Impact of the “Black Storm” on the national territory
Although the concept of “Black Storm” has its origins in meteorological phenomena in Asia to describe persistent rainfall that leads to severe flooding, the terminology has gained traction to define the intensity of the storm that Mexico is going through. This Tuesday, the interaction of various atmospheric systems generates a water risk scenario in almost a dozen states, where significant accumulations of water are expected in short periods of time.
The rain activity will not come alone. The National Meteorological Service (SMN) has confirmed that these rains will be directly linked to:
- Constant electrical discharges in cloud formation areas.
- Potential hail fall that can affect crops and urban areas.
- Gusts of wind that complicate the visibility and stability of light structures.
Atmospheric configuration and low pressure systems
The official report details that the instability is the product of low pressure channels extended over the interior and southeast of the Republic. These systems, in combination with the divergence in height and the massive influx of moisture from three flanks (Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea), create the ideal environment for the development of rapidly evolving storms.
This phenomenon especially affects the Valley of Mexico, as well as the western, central and eastern regions. The presence of these low-pressure channels acts as a magnet for moisture, lifting it into the upper layers of the atmosphere where it condenses into large-scale storm cells.
States with forecast of heavy rains this April 21
The highest concentration of energy is located in a belt of nine entities where heavy occasional rains of between 25 to 50 mm are expected. The specific regions with increased surveillance are:
- Michoacan: Mainly in the eastern area.
- Warrior: Northern, central and eastern sectors.
- State of Mexico: Western, central and eastern regions.
- Puebla: Central and southwest areas.
- Oaxaca: On its western fringe.
- Chiapas: Concentrated in the coastal region.
- Mexico City, Morelos and Tlaxcala: Widespread damage in much of its territories.

Approach of Cold Front 46 and severe winds
While the center and south deal with humidity, the northwest of the country faces the arrival of frontal system number 46. This new cold front approaches the border, causing a thermal and physical alteration in the atmosphere that results in intense winds. Gusts of up to 70 km/h are projected in the states of Baja California, Sonora and Chihuahua, which increases the risk of dust devils and reduced visibility on road sections.
Precipitation levels and areas of showers
The technical report stratifies the intensity of the rain in the rest of the country to allow adequate preventive planning:
Shower intervals (5 to 25 mm)
This condition is maintained in Jalisco, Colima, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo. Although the intensity is lower, persistence can generate flooding.
Isolated rain (0.1 to 5 mm)
Light rainfall is recorded in Chihuahua, Durango, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes and Nayarit.
